Heller - Heller (1989) + history

Heller is an extreme metal band formed in Belgrade, Yugoslavia(now Serbia) back in 1984. Their guitarist Attila played in a band called Dimenzija Smrti(Dimension of Death) before Heller. The band consisted, at the time of the 1st concert, of:
Zoća - vocals
Attila - guitar
Kole - guitar
Bičke - bass
Müller - drums

The material here will be reviewed chronologically rather than track-by-track. With history written by me with all the infos I have gathered so far(I appologize for the mistakes, where/if they're present!).

(From left to right: Müller, Deda, Attila and Kole. Heller in 1986(Attila was the vocalist back then))

"Inverzija"(Inversion) is more rooted in traditional metal, but a real headbanging track, its lyrics are dedicated to metal way of life: "Metal will never die/It will remain here to curse the people". I suppose it is the first track written, and the only one here to feature such lyrics. This track was called "Impossible(Metal is power)" on some bootlegs.
"Demonska devojka"(Demonic girl) was previously called "Innocent sacrifice for Sabbath" before it was translated in English.  This track is the most "worked" track on the album, as you can hear a variety of riffs and many tempo changes - if I should choose an anthem, this track must be it, even though all of them are strong.
"Armagedon" is a short track, but written in a similar manner as those mentioned above. It was called "Armageddon" before the translation as well.
"Dead or alive" is the only track that was never translated in Serbian. This track goes more into Teutonic territory, while mainting their own identity.
"Heller" is an instrumental track, but way faster than the rest of the tracks. If you ever get hold of their 1993 demo, there is a live version of this track from 1986. They played it even faster back then. The solo is a bit extended too, but it is missing the chainsaw-like ending part featured on LP.
"Krvava osveta"(Bloody revenge) starts with an acoustic intro, but don't be tricked by that as it soon turns into a monster. Žmegi's scream at the beginning of it is great, as it lasts around 12 seconds. This track was called "Black attack" before the translation.

At the same time, around 1987 I suppose, Kole and Deda left. Kole formed Amnesia, and later, Rapidforce. According to Metal-Archives, there were many people who joined and left the band, but by fall of 1987 the line-up was:
Žare - vocals
Attila - guitar
Dane - guitar
Čvora - bass
Müller - drums.
Žare's vocals were closer to the black/death metal. He had a very sinister voice, closer to what was happening in Brazilian circles rather than thrash/speed metal they were claiming to play.
Still, with Čvora's arrival, all the songs(except "Dead or Alive") underwent a translation process.
Žare, however, didn't stay much in the band, and at some point Žmegi became the new voice of Heller. So, let's continue

"Varvarska Horda"(Barbartic horde) has a slower tempo, but it is still a fast track. It is an interlude between their older tracks and the newer tracks, so to speak.
"Grob bez dna"(Bottomless grave) is a 2 minutes track, energetic and fun to listen to.
Inferno. Now we're talking. This track even goes on death metal territory...
Inkvizicija(Inquisition). ....and black metal...
Adam i Eva(Adam&Eve). ...and even grindcore.

Most of the tracks deal with lyrics such as death and all kind of macabre things, which were quite popular for that era.
As far as production goes, it is all very clear, the bass can be heard as well.
The artwork is quite original as well.

(From left to right: Dane, Čvora, Žmegi, Attila and Müller. Heller's line-up on the LP)

To sum up, you have your extreme metal history summed up in one LP. Highly recommended!

Interview with Sepulchral Voices(thrash metal from Belgium)

From left to right: Seb. Ironfist(guitar), J.(drums), GP Angel reaper(bass, vocals)

1.Hailz Sepulchral Voices, and welcome to the Sadistik Witchfukk zine! Because this is the first interview with you, tell us about your band!
GP. Angel reaper: Hi, dude! Sepulchral Voices is an old-school thrash metal band, which we started in July 2012. First, it was only me and Seb. Ironfist, who decided to make a band and after many rehearsals at my house (in the city of Tamines), we decided to find a drummer and so we found J. who joined us during October 2012.
Seb. Ironfist: The band started during the summer of 2012 with GP. Angel reaper and J., joined us in september. We are influenced by Sodom, Kreator, and all the speed metal, thrash metal scene from the 80's.
J.: Hail, we are a spritual-philosophic band with hippies-pacific-christian-buddist-muslim tendencies... Alright, I stop my jokes. We are a thrash metal band, our music is simply agressive.

2.Have you played in any other bands than Sepulchral Voices before? If so, give details about that!
GP. Angel reaper: Sepulchral Voices is my first serious band, because about few years ago, when i was a drummer, i started many projects, but it was nothing serious.
Seb. Ironfist: I never played in a band, because I have only 2 years of practising (guitar).
J.: I will tell you the most important ones, because if I will tell all the bands, it will take 2 pages : Lacerate (death-grind), Devoured (thrash-death), Extremist (thrash) and many others. Actually, I play in Goat Perversör (black-thrash), Vorax Virosus (grind-death), Sepulchral Voices and perhaps the come-back of Extremist.

3.You recorded a rehearsal-demo (I really like the quality, it sounds like it was recorded in 1984-1985, congrats to you for that!). What can you tell about it (songwriting process, lyrical themes). Who is writing the lyrics and who is writing the music?
GP. Angel reaper: Yes, it's a rehearsal demo with raw and dirty sound hehe. For composing songs, me and Seb are trying some riffs and when we found these good, J. put the drums on it. I write the lyrics, they're about metal, satan, witches... nothing original hehe.
Seb. Ironfist: GP. found the ideas for the lyrics and for the songs, it's me and Seb, after J. put the drum on it.
J.: First, we have to give thanks to Gabriel Tapia (singer and guitarist of Vorax Virosus. He also drew the logo of Vorax, t-shirt of Dehuman, Slaughter Messiah and the artwork of Maleficence demo tape). It was a home-made recording with a dictaphone and all the instruments in same time. After we recorded the vocals, Gabriel put all on his laptop and did the mixing. The results were what we expected.

4.On what formats is the demo available on (apart of mp3 haha): vinyl, cd or tape? Do you have any artworks for it? Do you plan to send it to distros, or it is only promotional and it is only for labels and such?
GP. Angel reaper: We have a demo available in cd (it's CD-r), everything was home-made haha. The first thing is to share our music, so we send or sell our demo to many people. We'll think about an artwork for the EP.
Seb. Ironfist: Demo is available on CD, we try to make our band known. The artwork is for the future EP.
J.: Have we an artwork ???

5.What other bands can you recommend us from Belgium?
GP. Angel reaper: Slaughter Messiah, Maleficence, Evil Shepherd, Evil Invaders, Horacle, Nemesis Irae, Goat Perversör, Vorax Virosus and Gae Bolga
Seb. Ironfist: Horacle, Slaughter Messiah, Maleficence, Goat Perversör and Vorax Virosus.
J.: Goat Pervesör (black-thrash), Vorax Virosus (grind-death), Slaughter Messiah (black-thrash), Dehuman (death), Nemesis Irae (black-death), Maleficence (black-thrash), Spermafrost (black and roll), Dezhumanizer (black), Domine Hate (death) for the most underground.

6.Did you played any live shows yet?
GP. Angel reaper: No, we have to make more songs.
Seb. Ironfist: We are ready, but we have to make more songs because now, we can play only 15 minutes and it's not too much.
J.: Not for now, but later yes.

7.How is the response so far about your music?
GP. Angel reaper : I'm very glad, because many people like our music, we have a lot of support.
Seb. Ironfist: The comments are good.
J.: Our music is shit, don't listen to it, because she'll turn you from the way of god haha.

8.Do you take a look on Fenriz's Band of the Week? I know he recommends old-school stuff, and stuff that you play too. What do you think about the latest Darkthrone releases?
GP. Angel reaper: I don't know, I'll try to get a look on it. I've listened the last Darkthone and I liked it.
Seb. Ironfist: I've listened the last Darkthrone and I liked it, especially the track "Leave no Cross Unturned", but I prefer the "Dark Thrones and Black Flags" album, because it's more punkish.
J.: No and I didn't knew that, I will die less idiot haha. The last Darkthrone is good, but I have some difficulties with the clean vocals.

9.Your top 10 all-time favourite albums are...?
GP. Angel reaper: I can't answer because the numbers is over than 10 for me haha.
Seb. Ironfist:
  • Skull Fist - Head öf the Pack
  • Iron Maiden - Killers
  • Sodom - In the Sign of Evil
  • Kreator - Endless Pain
  • Angel Witch - Angel Witch
  • Darkthrone - Dark Thrones and Black Flags
  • Celtic Frost - Morbid Tales
  • Enthroned - Towards the Skullthrone of Satan
  • Violent Force - Malevolent Assault of Tomorrow
  • Destruction - Sentence of Death
J.: This question is too difficult for me, because there are many albums from many bands. I can't tell you only
10. It will take a long-time.

10.What bands can you recommend from Hungary, Ukraine, Romania and Moldova?
GP. Angel reaper: O-Zone from Moldova haha.
Seb. Ironfist: Tormentor from Hungary.
J.: In few minutes... From Ukraine, I know: Nokturnal Mortum, Drudkh, Hate forest. From Hungary: Sear Bliss, Archivum, Hungarica and from Romania: Negură Bunget.

Seb. Ironfist: Beers, Waffle, Fries and Pekêt(walloon name for juniper).
J.: Mold with fries, Carbonnade à la flamande, Waterzooï, many kind of cheese with many special beers: trappist, from abbey, with fruits etc.... For all tastes and all ages.

13.What about your future plans?
GP. Angel reaper & Seb. Ironfist: Doing some gigs, it's the most important.
J.: Being famous with our band, so we can eat Jack Daniel's, lobster, caviar and pay some hookers haha. No, seriously, play much as possible with a lot of fun.

14.That's all for now. The last (threatening) words are yours!
GP. Angel reaper: Thx for the interview and your support, spread our music !
J.: Thank you, and cheers from Belgium.

Interview with Eliud Urdiales(Stranger Blaze guitarist)

1.Hailz Eliud! Tell little infos about your band!
Well, I started to play the guitar like 4 years ago. My friend and bassist from the band, Albert Garcia, was
the person who taught me the basic things on guitar, then we were searching musicians to make a band. That's how we met this guy Jerry Lopez, who was the first lead guitar in the band, then Adolfo Sanchez joined to the band answering a post of us in some web page for musicians. That's how we got the first Stranger Blaze line-up, after some gigs, the recording of our first demo, and after the "South Demolition" tour, Jerry Lopez leaved the band, so we give the lead-guitar place to our friend Rafael Garcia, so I can tell that this is the line-up actually. Albert Garcia at bass guitar, Adolfo Sanchez at drums, Rafael Garcia at lead guitar, and me at rhythm-guitar and vocals.

2.What bands influenced you?
About our influences, I can say that everyone of us has different influences. But the only band that we have in common it's Metallica. You know, it was the first band that I heared when I discovered this thrash metal world, of course it was with one of their golden albums, the "Master of Puppets" album. But I can say that we have other bands between our influences, like Exodus, Slayer, Angelus Apatrida, Crisix, Strike Master, Violator, Heathen, Testament, Sodom etc. Sometimes it's hard to find a point in common between us, because of liking: for example, me and Albert are more into thrash metal and Adolfo use to hear more black and death metal stuff while Rafael has mixed tastes in music, because he was studying music before, so he has more apreciation sense for other kind of music, but he still kicking his ass on thrash..

3.Did you played in other bands before?
No, this is my first band, and the last one, because Stranger Blaze means a lot for us, it's what gives us the happiness that we need to still fighting, you know.

4.How is the thrash scene there in Mexico? What about extreme metal one?
To be honest, sometimes the people can't appreciate what we have here in our own country. You know there's a lot of good bands here, but also a lot of problems. I mean, now there's not enough support for the bands, but everyday you can see a new band that want to fight in this battle you know. I think in the future the world will see that we can make good music here, and let see to all the people that we can go there and show that we have enough balls to destroy some big festival.

5.Can you recommend some of those bands?
Yeah, you can go and hear good mexican bands like Strike Master, our friends Thrashsteel, Intoxxxicated
Commando, Disgrace, Next, Drunkiller, Toxik Avenger, or from our local scene you can hear Deathstriker, Hercobulus, Legislator, Excesus etc.

6.Your first demo was called "Let Destruction Begins". To me it is a very good thrash demo. Are you satisfied with it? Did it received good reviews from the underground press?
We are satisfied with our first work, yes, but like a musician you always want to make something
better, so for the first LP we are recording those songs again, but making new details. And besides recording
the new songs, we received good reviews from the underground press in our local scene and in some blogs and online tv shows. It was amazing for us, cause you know, people in other parts of the country and in other countries realized about our existence hahaha. Internet can be bad for musicians, you know, illegal downloads and that shit but its a good way to show the people what you are doing.

7.Now you're working on your debut LP. What can you tell about it? Do you want to sign with a well-known label, or it will be self-produced?
Yes, we are working in the "Let Destruction Begins" LP. We were recording those songs from the EP and new songs, so the people will like it. And talking about labels, of course we would like to sign with some important label to make bigger things you know, like independent musician sometimes the things are hard. For now we are trying to reach an agreement with a label from Mexico City, but it's not a fact yet.

8.Now tell us, what bands from Ukraine, Hungary and Romania do you know!
To be honest, I don't know a lot of bands from that part of the world, but I was hearing some days ago a band called Toxic Dolls, they are from Ukraine or Poland, I'm not sure..

9.Recommend to the readers, please, something from your local cuisine, drinks and so on.
The people who has never been in Mexico always, talks about tacos and burritos. But there's a lot of delicious food like tostadas, enchiladas, pico de gallo, chalupas, tlacoyos. From my natal city there is, barbacoa, cabrito, and about the drinks you have to taste Tequila, and the mexican beer Corona the most important mexican brand of beer. To be honest if you ask me for my favorite cuisine, i'll tell you mexican food.

10.Your favourite all-time 10 metal albums are?
of course the Master of Puppets (Metallica)
Hell Awaits (Slayer)
Bonded By Blood (Exodus)
Eternal Nightmare (Vio-Lence)
Epidemic of Violence (Demolition Hammer)
Thrash Zone (DRI)
Majestic Strike (Strike Master)
Beneath the Remains (Sepultura)
Kill Em All (Metallica)
Agent Orange (Sodom)

11.What about Stranger Blaze's future plans?
We will make a roof, so the next week we will work like masons hahahha. No, seriously, we will finish the album and then we will try to make a national tour, bigger than the first one. Trying to go to new cities and show to people our shit. We will put up for sale our album in Mexico, South America, U.S, Europe and rest of the world by shipping. Actually, we are working on new stuff for the second album. So, if the scene close the doors, it doesn't matter, because Stranger Blaze will kick them again.

12.Thanks for the interview. Last words are yours!
We want all the people to support the underground thrash metal scene! Give support to the new bands, because yes, the old-school gave us what we have now, but the newschool will keep the spirit alive!

Stranger Blaze can be contacted here: http://www.facebook.com/pages/Stranger-Blaze/159725484105506

Interview with Davide Cillo(Burning Nitrum)

The ones behind the thrashin fury

1.Hello, Davide! Welcome to Sadistik Witchfukk zine! Because this is your first interview for us, tell us something about your band!
Hey brother, thanks for the interview! It's a pleasure for me to throw our band on Sadistik Witchfukk. Burning Nitrum were born in 2010, with the goal of proposing some good thrash metal played in the old school way, looking for a sound which differentiates us from other new thrash bands: the new wave of thrash gave us a lot of clone-bands, while on the 80's every band had a different sound. I had a lot of line-up problems, it was kinda hard to find other four people on my region, people with passion and love for the genre, ready to spend their lives on tour. The 30th April 2012 we released our debut EP "Pyromania", which received great reviews from all over the world, and found some space on some italian and foreign magazines... that was great for me!

2.You are known on the internet(at least to us), for being active into thrash metal movement, helping new bands(by sharing their vids) etc. How did you got into thrash metal?
Well, I don't exactly remember how I started listening to this kind of music, but I think I've always known famous bands like Megadeth, Slayer, Metallica... and when I realized it was my stuff, I started getting deeper and deeper on the underground movement and looked for less known bands. I remember when the drummer and me listened to the track "Terror Squad" from Artillery for the first time, we were like on shock state ahahah... the first thing we said, together, was: "this kicks ass at all!!" Probably that was the reason why I wanted to start checking the underground eheh, until I became a fanatic vinylls-buyer!

3.Your band Burning Nitrum sounds great, totally old-school thrash metal. Can you name some of your favourite thrash bands? What about your favourite LP’s?
If I talk about bands from the 80's, I will finish tomorrow morning brother ahah! I will name some good thrash albums from the new wave: my favourite new band is Vektor, and their "Black Future" is genial. Other good LP's from the new millenium are the second one from Warbringer, the one from Violator, the first three from Municipal Waste and well there are other ones!!

4.The people behind Sadistik Witchfukk are of romanian and hungarian ethnicity. Do you know any metal bands from these countries? What about Ukraine?
Was there a thrash band called Snapjaw in Romania? But I don't know if they're still active. I'll check it out. And I remember of a hungarian thrash band called Beyond, if I'm right. Ukraine has a good thrash scene. I've heard of bands like Adem, Nuclear Test, Zombie Attack, Violent Omen, Crusher... hope Ukraine will keep it up!!

5. What metal styles do you listen besides thrash?
I really love the old school metal and hardcore punk in general, of course thrash is my stuff but old school heavy metal, speed, death, black (especially atmospheric black bands), the first power... the important thing is that there are none of those modern influences... metal must be kept pure brother!

6.As we noticed you are working with your debut LP. How many tracks do you plan? Where will you record your new stuff and when it will be published?
That's right, Burning Nitrum are working on the debut LP. Playing time should be around 45 minutes, and we have a couple of ideas about where to record it, the certain thing is that the sound will be really distant from the one heard on our "Pyromania" EP, it will be kept old school but will receive a serious professional studio production. I can't anticipate much now, stay in contact with Burning Nitrum 'cause our album won't disappoint you at all! Promised!

7. How is the situation with your live shows? Did you opened for some legendary bands so far? Did you played/plan to play outside of Italy?
Yeah we are promoting our EP with live shows as much as possible, but not outside Italy. I'm sad to say that in Italy, especially in its southern part (where we live) the "pay to play" phenomenon is really strong. It's a mafia. It's nearly impossible there opening to legendary bands without paying a good amount of money. We are trying to fight this system. We don't support this way to do, and pay to play must fall. What about playing outside Italy... yes, we started planning our album tour, and we will!

8.Did you played any covers in rehearsal room and your live performances?
Yeah, we played "Holy Wars" from Megadeth, "Game Over" from Nuclear Assault and "And then There Were None" from Exodus. I think it's over, we prefer playing our songs man!

9.What bands do you recommend us from your local scene from Bari?
Oh, there are a lot of great thrash bands there in Italy, check out http://www.italianthrashattack.com/site/. Our underground scene became not worse than the american one, and actually, it's maybe the best of the whole world these years. There are a lot of bands but also a lot of assholes ready to speculate on guys like us. But fortunately, there is also someone organizing events honestly and with passion, which for sure it's the most important thing. What about my region... check out Assaulter's "Crushed By Raging Mosh"!

10.Italian kitchen is very famous in the world. Do You recommend us some tasty foods  (except pizza, lasagne and pasta of course)
Oh yeah, italian food it's fucking sick! Check out focaccia, panzerotto, risotto and parmigiana di melanzane! The last one is amazing!

11. Grazie, Davide! Thrash ’til Death! Share your last burning words in the end!
Thank you for the space you gave us! I want to invite metal listeners to come to concerts and support the scene, enjoy concerts of amazing underground bands and not only famous ones (which are often worse), and please... instead of spending money for smoking or bullshits... buy the music! Underground musicians need your support, and money are well spent! Like the page "http://www.facebook.com/BurningNitrum" and keep in contact with us, brothers! Thrash 'Till Death, let the fire burn!!
